Feudal Japan 50 years ago the half demon Inu Yasha sought to use the power of the Shikon no Tama, or Jewel of Four Souls to become a full demon. His plans were thwarted by the miko, Priestess Kikyo, who bound him to a tree putting him in a death like state. Kikyo suffered a mortal wound prior to confronting Inu Yasha. She goes to her death taking the sacred jewel with her.
The modern era (the present) Its Kagome Higurashi’s 15th birthday. On the way out to school she notices her younger brother, Sota, over by the building that houses an old well. The family resides at the Higurashi Shrine which has many structures and Sota was told not to play near the well. He wasn’t playing, just looking for the family cat Buyo. Kagome goes inside to find the cat when suddenly the cap on the well blows off and the seal is broken. She is grabbed by the many arms of Mistress Centipede whose bones have been lying dormant in the Bone Eaters well. Kagome escapes from the demon using a power she didn’t even know she had. She finds herself at the bottom of the well, only she has been sent back in time almost 700 years to the warring states era of feudal Japan.
She recognizes the sacred tree growing in Inu Yasha’s forest in this time and at the Higurashi Shrine in her own and heads for it. When she gets to the tree she finds a boy with dog ears bound to the tree by an arrow. As she investigates this new creature she is surrounded by the local villagers and taken captive. Kagome is taken to the village where the High Priestess Keade pronounces that she’s not a demon. Keade suspects Kagome is the reincarnation of her sister Kikyo, keeper of the sacred jewel and powerful priestess.
Mistress Centipede attacks the village seeking the sacred jewel and Kagome makes a run for it. She flees to Inu Yasha’s forest and finds herself back at the sacred tree. Her plea for help has awakened the sleeping boy bound to the tree.
The demon follows Kagome and attacks her for the sacred jewel. The shikon no tama is ripped out of Kagome’s body and swallowed by Mistress Centipede. Kagome lifts the spell binding Inu Yasha to the tree so that he may fight and destroy the transformed demon. Inu Yasha makes short work of Mistress Centipede and then sets his sights on capturing the Shikon Jewel for himself.
